5 Ways to say “Be My Valentine” to a Geek
Posted in Coffee Break by Jon, February 12th, 2007
Face it, it’s pretty difficult to declare your undying love for someone who refuses to come out of their room until they have leveled-up their Blood Elf to Lv.60 with mage, thief and barbarian skills all maxed-out. At least, that’s what my ex girlfriends used to say about me. But fear not! There are ways to communicate your love for a geek like me without any of that awkward “talking” or “real world interaction” and whatnot. Here are 5 ways you can tell your geek “I love you” this Valentine’s day…
1) Surprise him in the online game he plays
Whether he’s a WoW fan or spends his time growing pineapples in Animal Crossing, surprising your geek by popping up unannounced (and preferably dressed as some totally hot Blood Elf) in his favourite online game to spout some romantic lines would be a sweet and cheap way to make him smile.
2) Bake him a nerdy cake
Look to the internets for some inspiration on the various kinds of weird and wonderful nerd-themed confectionary that people are coming up with. Nothing says “I think you’re teh awesome” like a cake in the shape of a couple of Nintendo Wii controllers (I think it also says “Happy 11th Birthday” but you can probably improvise around that).
3) Make him some ASCII art or Rasterbate him a photo…
Creativity is good. It also, in these cases, costs nothing. You can create and print an attractive ASCII art rendition of some text or any picture using these links. Rasterbating is a bit more involved, but it’s basically a technique where you blow up any picture to a massive size, print it out over multiple sheets of paper which you then assemble like a jigsaw puzzle. Got a favourite picture of you and your geek together? Why not make it 12-foot wide?
Once you’ve made your gift, don’t send it to him manually! CRON job it to be sent at precisely 00:00:00 on Valentine’s day. He’ll appreciate the efficiency.
4) Take him to a Video Game Music Concert
You know how he wasn’t really into going to the opera with you? This is exactly like that, except he’ll love it. Video game music concerts performed by symphony orchestras represent a mysterious, grey area in entertainment that is almost universally appealing. It appeals to geeks because it’s music that they are familiar with and will evoke their emotions. It appeals to non-gamers because underneath all the strobe lightning and children standing in their chairs screaming “DIE HORDE!“, it’s a classical music concert.
5) Wear some HTTPanties.
Actually, wear ONLY HTTPanties. That would make my Valentine’s day.
